Two Local
Schools Donate to ACE
|
ACE
receives support from several local schools and we are most
grateful to them for all the work they put in to help us.
|
|
|
|
Wednesday
13th October was Harvest Festival at Pendeen Primary School.
Guests
were William and Augustine who were visiting from Uganda.
The
school donated the £227 proceeds to ACE.
|
|
|
|
A
concert by St. Hilary Primary School Choir took place at Goldsithney
Methodist Church on Friday 12th November.
Guest
Artistes were Bagas Porthia and members of Marazion Apollo
Male Choir.
A
collection in aid of ACE took £320.
|
|
Other
organisations and individuals regularly send us donations
and the trustees would like to thank you all.

Another Fundraiser
in Scarborough
|
Back
in the summer, Mrs Valerie Humphreys held a coffee morning
in aid of ACE at her home in Scarborough (see below).
On
23rd November her daughter, Mrs Katharine Minghella, held
a fundraiser at her home, assisted by Valerie, and raised
£214. They distrbuted leaflets about ACE and showed
a DVD about our work.

ACE Cream
Tea
 |
|
The annual
ACE Cream Tea took place at The Old Post Office in Newmill,
on Sunday 3rd October between 2.30pm and 5pm.
Teas were
served and there
were also stalls selling cakes, books, plants and wooden garden
items.
|
 |
|
ACE Trustee,
Joy Kell, with her husband, Ray, worked hard in the kitchen
all the afternoon, preparing the teas.
|
 |
|
In attendance
were William and Augustine, our two
teachers visiting from Uganda.
This
gave local ACE supporters a chance to meet them and also
was an opportunity for William and Augustine to see how
ACE supporters raise funds for their schools and how hard
we work for them.
|
 |
|
A regular
attender at our Open Gardens and Cream Teas is Rev. Tim
Hawkins, the vicar of Madron and Gulval. Tim always prays
for fine weather for our outdoor events and this time, as
usual, he was successful.
William
and Augustine were pleased to meet him.
|
 |
|
They also
met our local Member of Parliament, Andrew George, who attended
with his wife, Jill. Andrew had been helpful in liasing with
the Home Office to obtain their entry visas.
He presented
both of them with a tin of sweets from the Houses of Parliament
and a copy of his book A View from the Bottom Left-Hand
Corner.
They were
also presented with copies of Penzance 2000 - the Town
and Around by Melissa Hardie.
Both books
were published in Newmill. For further information, or to
order a copy of either book for yourself, click here
and
scroll down the page.
|
|
As
usual, ACE secretary, Roger Drew, had a stall offering wooden
items he had made in his workshop - bird houses and feeders,
truggles and planters.
When
trade was slack he was reduced to trying to sell himself .....
|
|
|
.....
but there were no takers.
This
was fortunate because he and his wife, Bette, the hardworking
ACE treasurer, are indispensable. When Bette had finished
adding up the proceeds the ACE funds had swelled by £284.
A couple
of donations received in the following days have brought
the total to just over £310.

|
Fundraiser
on Dartmoor
|
ACE supporter,
Tanya Jewell, organised a Charity Fundraiser over the August
Bank Holiday weekend in the small village of Ponsworthy on
Dartmoor.
The proceeds
were divided between ACE, Shelterbox and Leusdon Church, and
Tanya has sent ACE a cheque for £350.
|
Newmill Open
Gardens 2010
Newmill
gardens were again open in aid of ACE on Sunday 20th June.
It was
a beautiful sunny day and Newmill quickly filled up with
visitors.
By the
end of the afternoon we had raised just over £3,300
for the ACE funds.
|
|
|
Cream
teas were available in two of the gardens and there were
lots of interesting things for sale - plants, artworks,
quilts, wooden garden items, books and CDs.
|
|
|
We put
on an exhibition of quilts in The Jamieson Library at The
Old Post Office.
This
quilt was made and donated by ACE's Sponsorship Secretary,
Janet Pye, and was won in a competition by Edris Stratford.
|
|
|
| There
was also a display of sculpture by local sculptor, Andrea Garrihy
..... |
|
|
|
.....
and a small choir from Bolitho School performed in the garden
at The Mill House.

Coffee Morning
in Scarborough
Mrs
V. Humphreys has recently sent ACE a donation of £240
which she raised by organising a coffee morning in Scarborough.
Mrs
Humphreys had previously contacted ACE because she wanted
to sponsor a young man, Denis Musasizi, who she had met
during a trekking holiday in Uganda. We have helped her
to get him placed at Kisoro Vision School.
|
Concert for
ACE
Mounts
Bay Rotary Club organised a concert and donated the proceeds
to ACE. It took place on Saturday 8th May at Paul Church
and raised £200.
The
performers were Kate Cattran (soprano), Angela Thomas (alto),
Rob Murdoch (tenor) and Mike Preen (bass), with Nigel Wicken
playing the piano and organ.

For the
first time, ACE was awarded a place for a runner in the Virgin
London Marathon on Sunday 25th April 2010.
Our runner
was Polly Jacobs, who is a doctor and lives in Salisbury.
She is a niece of ACE trustee, Phil Budden.
Polly
is a keen runner who has run the London Marathon before. She
is seen here on the train to the start at Blackheath
with her brother, Julian, who also competed.
|
|
|
Polly
was proudly displaying her ACE running vest.
She
reported "My brother and I got the train up with
family and then I made my way to the red start and my brother
to the blue start.
|
|
|
"Despite the predictions of hot dry weather, the runners
were heavily rained upon in the starting area and unfortunately
for me the rain stopped my Garmin (stop watch/pacing device)
from working so sadly I had no means of pacing myself for
the 26.2 miles to come.
I
was in the 4th block back and after passing the red start
and seeing our support team for the first time, the first
3 miles were spent doing a lot of side stepping around fellow
runners before I could really get into a steady pace.
|
|
|
"There
were so many highlights such as passing over Tower Bridge
and the incredible support of the crowds and seeing all
the amazing runners with "in memory of..." on the back of
their shirts. It is certainly a very emotional event to
be a part of.
I
think the race is a bit like labour you forget how long
and painful it is, but the presence of my family at 5 key
points along the way really helped keep me going through
the most painful miles.
|
|
|
|
Unfortunately
I did not quite get the time I hoped for and ran 12 minutes
slower than last year, but I did manage to "sprint" the last
500 metres in order not to be beaten by a teletubby!!!
I crossed
the line in 4 hours 2 minutes and vowed I would hang up my
marathon boots....well for the immediate future anyway.
I have
been overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and have raised
around £1,700 for ACE so far."

£102.
Many
thanks to all who helped or took part.

Novelty Dog
Show
|
A Novelty
Dog Show, in aid of ACE, took place on Sunday, 28th February
2010, at Marazion Community Hall.
The
judge was Dr. Uwe Gerecke.
ACE profited
from the entry fees, a tombola, a bookstall and the sale of
refreshments. By the end of the afternoon our funds were increased
by £413.
|
|

|
|
An enthusiastic
crowd attended and there were a good number of entries.
These
were the winners in the 'Best Long Coated' section.
|
|
There
was a good variety of dogs and owners .....
|
|
|
 |
|
.....
this was the popular winner of the 'Fancy Dress' section .....
|
|
.....
and a special mention must go to Newmill's own Henry, seen
here with his owner, Geoff Brighton.
Henry
was looking immaculate without his usual coating of mud and
won rosettes in both the 'Best Rehomed Dog' and 'Waggiest
Tail' categories.
