Peake began fundraising by collecting outside a local Penzance supermarket and
selling plants, books and bric-a-brac at carboot sales. This
is continuing, with the help of a few other people.
This
progressed to sponsored swims and a sponsored walk, and toy sales
raised some money. £3,000 was raised in 2004 through various
activities in local schools, and contributions were received from
Cornish churches and chapels.

then we have raised

They were selling some of their toys, books, jewellery, and other
things. By the end of Saturday they had raised £34 and they went
on to raise a total of £51.65. For part of Sunday they bravely
sat outside in the rain under a large umbrella.

ACE-built classrooms. the desks will be inscribed with their names.

Thank you
to the girls and to all who supported them.

cream and scones, there was a cake stall and a raffle.

was the second major fundraiser in Scarborough this year and we are
very grateful to our friends in the north for their support. |

Morvoren
- a Beautiful Garden, Open for the First Time
On Saturday
11th and Sunday 12th June, Penny
Black, gardener, craftswoman/artist, writer, plantswoman, opened
her garden near Land's End for the first time.
Saturday was beautifully
sunny and cream teas were enjoyed in the garden. Sunday was a
complete contrast with heavy rain for most of the time.
Saturday was busy all
the time and, despite the weather, 180 people visited on Sunday.
|
|
|
Previously,
Penny lived at Stithians and the garden she and her husband Bob
created there featured on Channel Four TV in a series called Consuming
Passions and was transmitted in many other parts of the world.
Penny and Bob created
their current garden from a mere field and building site. It is
now a series of interconnecting spaces, gloriously planted with
an eclectic mix, showcasing Penny's knowledge of and passion for
plants of all kinds and her extraordinary ability to put them
together in surprising but deeply satisfying ways. The garden
ends in a wild flower meadow overlooking the ocean.
|
|
|
Considering that it
must be one of the most exposed places in West Cornwall it is
quite extraordinary what Penny and Bob have achieved.
The gardens
at Morvoren are currently featured as Garden of the Month in the
June issue of Cornwall Today magazine.
|
|
|
There were plants for
sale from Penny's garden, a book stall and cream teas and entertainment
from local musicians.
The proceeds
will be divided between ACE and Shelterbox.

Indian Lunch in
Scarborough
|
ACE
has a developing 'support group' in Scarborough, North Yorkshire.
It was started by Valerie Humphreys, who has visited southwest Uganda,
and sponsors a student in our Sponsorship
Scheme. Recently a fundraising event was held in the home of
Dr Saad and Mrs Naharr Mamoon, who have also become student sponsors.
Val
writes -
We
had a very successful day for our Indian Lunch which we held on
Thursday 5th May at the home of Dr Saad and Mrs Naharr Mamoon. I
told everyone that the money we raised would be used to buy desks
for the newly renovated classrooms at Rukongi
School.
I
put up a display of pictures showing old building, new building,
desks etc. etc. and again showed the ACE DVD. We raised a total
of £322. When I return to Uganda later this year, I hope to be able
to come back with a picture of one of the desks saying 'donated
by Scarborough support group, Yorkshire , England' or some such
appropriate wording.
|
|

Saad,
Naharr and Val
|
|
Naharr
did all the cooking of the indian food (lamb curry with tiny potatoes,
chicken korma, beef and turkey kebabs, hard boiled eggs with lentils
in a coconut sauce, mixed vegetable bhatee, rice, and a mixed
salad). I made banoffee pie, apple and cream with crunchy topping
and a tropical fruit salad for our dessert.
Dr Mamoon
insisted on doing ALL the washing up for us.!!!
|
|

Katharine,
Naharr and Val
|
|
There were 22 people at the event. We also had a raffle and a bring
and buy stall. I also was given some donations by people who could
not be present on the day. My daughter Katharine is one of my support
group and ran the raffle and bring and buy along with two of her friends. |
Bank Holiday Coffee
Morning
 |
|
A coffee morning
was held on Bank Holiday Monday 2nd May at Chynoey, Newmill, the
home of Vic and Angela Peake.
Plants, cakes
and books were on sale and £214 was raised for ACE funds.
